One of my favorite things to do is name the wines. We named our Delightfully Delicious in memory of my friend Delight Hefner Eidson from Idabel, Okla. When Delight was born, her father looked at her and said she was a “delight to the eye,” hence Delight Hefner. Delight lived her 47 years to the fullest. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and friend to all. Delight lost her battle to cancer in August of 2008, but didn’t lose our hearts.

When naming our Sauvignon Blanc, I was lying in bed listening to the weather and Rick Mitchell said, “Okay, ladies it’s going to be a “”Skirt Alert”" day.” Ah-ha!!! The name of the Sauvignon Blanc would be “Skirt Alert,” a refreshing wine that would make you want to go out and spin around and let the wind blow your skirt up. Spin and be set free!

Thunderhead Cabernet Sauvignon had an obvious inspiration. Oklahoma has always been known for its splendid thunderheads, and now we are also recognizing Oklahoma’s new NBA team the Oklahoma City Thunder. We actually thought about hiding basketballs in the clouds. Go Thunder!!!

The Stampede Red Zinfandel came along when the Thunder announced the mascot would be a Bison. The Red Zinfandel is a full bodied, drier red wine, and I could see the bison stampeding through the dust.

And the list goes on…

Alan Shepard of Shepard Art in Edmond designs all of our labels, and I swear the man can see the picture in my mind. I call him with the idea and he takes my inspiration and makes it real. The image is always perfect. I know in the beginning he had to think I was strange! After all, who names a wine “Skinny Dip?”

When discussing the names of wines, I thought the name of the wine should be linked to Oklahoma as well as the picture. I knew what I wanted, but the problem would be finding someone that could work with me and transform that idea into a wine label. Not knowing anyone in the Oklahoma City area made it a true challenge.

I didn’t want “just a picture;” I wanted it expressed by art. I searched the internet and the name Alan Shepard kept coming back to me. I felt he was my guy. I checked out his website, we met and the rest is history. Alan and I have worked great together and I believe his work only gets better. He is part of us now.
